Botox is a purified protein toxin produced by clostridium botulinum bacteria. Botox is a toxin; however, if is used in extremely small amounts, it is especially effective in relaxing the “expression” lines found around the eyes and forehead. Botox is injected into the muscle that created the undesired wrinkle using a very fine gauge needle. When injected, Botox weakens the muscle by blocking the nerve impulse from reaching the area. When the muscle weakens and relaxes, the overlying skin also relaxes causing the wrinkles to gradually soften and, in some cases, disappear. A slight sting, or burning sensation, may be experienced for a few seconds upon injection; but once completed discomfort should subside. Maximum results are usually achieved in three to five days. Nerves are not affected, so numbness should not occur. Botox affects only the immediate area, so other muscles remain unaffected. Botox will normally be effective for three to five months. Additional treatment is required after this time, with subsequent treatments often lasting longer. There is little down time associated with this procedure and the patient should brn to work and noe able to returmal social activity immediately. Botox has proven to be safe with little systemic complications documented.
