The number of women choosing breast enlargement has increased dramatically over the years making augmentation mammaplasty one of today’s most common cosmetic surgery procedures. The procedure is very effective in satisfying a woman’s desire for a fuller bustline and improved self-esteem. It can also correct changes in breast size due to childbirth or aging.
A personal consultation is the first step for any patient considering breast augmentation surgery. During the consultation, your plastic surgeon will assess your physical and emotional health and discuss your specific goals for surgery. It is important to discuss your medical history including existing medical conditions, drug allergies, family history of breast cancer, medications, previous surgeries, and mammogram results. As part of the consultation, your breasts will be examined. During the exam, your surgeon will consider the size and shape of your breasts, the quality of your skin and the placement of your nipples and areolas (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipples). As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with breast augmentation. They will be outlined in an informed consent sheet provided during your consultation. We strongly encourage each patient to carefully review these risks and discuss them with your surgeon prior to proceeding with surgery.
In general, breast augmentation surgery involves a small incision either underneath the breast, partially around the areola, or within the armpit. Once the incision is made, a pocket is created to insert the implant. The pocket is made either behind the breast tissue or underneath the pectoral muscle.
Most women who have their breasts enlarged receive saline-filled implants. Saline-filled implants consist of a silicone shell filled with salt water and are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for breast augmentation.
The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and normally takes one to two hours to complete. Following surgery, you may wear a gauze dressing or a surgical bra. There will be some swelling and discoloration that will gradually disappear. Vigorous activities, especially raising your arms, should be avoided for up to two weeks. Patients usually are up and about within two days of surgery. You should be able to return to work within a few days to a week or two.
